The BWF World Tour Finals 2022 have been relocated to Bangkok and postponed. The decision was made when Guangzhou, China, told badminton’s international governing body that it would no longer be able to host the season-ending competition.
The season-ending BWF World Tour Finals competition for badminton will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 7-11 December 2022, a week sooner and in a different nation than was initially planned.
The Badminton World Body BWF World Tour, the sport’s international federation, announced the revised dates after determining that the tournament could no longer be held in Guangzhou, China, owing to continuing Covid-19 restrictions.
“The BWF has decided to move the HSBC BWF Finals 2022 in cooperation with the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) because to the many constraints brought about by the current pandemic scenario,” the organisation stated in a statement.
The competition will be held in the Nimibutr Arena in Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, which hosted the 2020 Finals in January 2021. The BWF said that the date change was “due to stadium availability as a result of the change in site.”
The top eight on the BWF World Tour Race to Guangzhou rankings in each of badminton’s five categories – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles – will qualify for the Finals.
The Australian Open, the season’s last regular Tour tournament, will determine all 40 qualifiers.
